FOIPOP Response

Update May 11, 2021

LONG DELAYED FOIPOP RESPONSE REVEALS THAT TPCI’S APPLICATION FOR ITS OYSTER NURSERY CONTAINED MANY PIECES OF FALSE INFORMATION.

Unfortunately NSDFA’s officials did not catch the errors, including many of them in the “Technical Review” which lead to the issuance of a license for the nursery. Here are a few examples of false statements:

  • the nearest salmon run is 30 to 50 miles away —-in fact many salmon run rivers feed into Antigonish Harbour

  • the width of the harbour at Town Point is 1km ——- in fact the width of the harbour at this point is 400m

  • two pipes will be laid in one trench during one tide cycle —— in fact three pipes were laid in at least two trenches over multiple days ——all without receiving a permit from NS Lands and Forests as explicitly required by the NSDFA license

Considering that the FOIPOP response contained only 45% of the pages deemed responsive, and portions of the 45% were redacted, we believe there are likely other errors and potentially other damaging information that has not been disclosed. FOAH members have written to the Premier, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and other ministers to revoke TPCI’s license as it was based at least in part on false information.
