A large scale Oyster Farm poses safety risks for recreational and commercial users of the harbour
We believe the placement of 36,000 floating oyster cylinders on either side of the main channel near the mouth of the harbour represents a safety risk to the commercial fishermen and recreational boaters and paddlers who use the harbour. The winds, tides and currents in this portion of the harbour change frequently and very quickly. Getting caught in one of the fields of oyster floats in adverse wind, current conditions could create serious risk.
Further complicating this dangerous situation is the fact that aquaculture gear has been dislodged by storms in many harbours as volumes of ropes, cables, floats and other gear are scattered among channels, along coast lines and being swept out to sea causing navigational risks for years
