Recreation and Culture
From ancient times to the current day, the waters of Antigonish Harbour have been a common resource available to all for swimming, fishing, hunting, gathering, boating or simply enjoying its beauty. The landing has been protected and its trails become a treasured sanctuary and escape. Likewise Dunn’s Beach and Mahoney’s Beach covering the north end of the harbour on either side of the cut have been declared protected beaches by the Province. The Town has invested heavily in an improved sewage plant, while farmers have made strides to limit agricultural run-off. All of this has contributed to economic growth and the attractiveness of Antigonish. Approximately 1250 residences are located along the shores of the harbour, many in homes built over the course of the last 20-30 years to take advantage of the views and recreational opportunities in the harbour.
Covering 120 strategically located acres of harbour surface with 36,000 oyster floats and placing a large processing plant on the shores of the harbour is unlikely to accelerate the growth which has occurred around the harbour and may jeopardize it.
