FRIENDS OF ANTIGONISH HARBOUR (FOAH) WAS FORMED TO PROTECT ANTIGONISH HARBOUR.
Primary Threats and Risks
Town Point Consulting Inc. (TPCI) was granted long term, renewable, exclusive leases and licenses to place 23,000 oyster floats, 52km of ropes and misc. other gear over 90 acres in the center of the outer portion of Antigonish Harbour. The “Updates” section of this website tells the multi-year story leading to this outcome.
FOAH firmly believes and has presented ample evidence that TPCI’s plan creates risks to:
commercial fisherman who fish out of the harbour as well recreational boaters using the outer harbour
environmentally critical eelgrass present throughout the two largest lease areas
fish and fish habitat beneath the lease areas
endangered piping plover nesting areas on Dunn’s Beach (Canada Wildlife Services’s recommendation for buffer zones were ignored)
submerged archeological resources of the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia (Office of L’nu Affairs requests for an evaluation of these resources was dismissed)
Current Focus
Hi-lite the obvious bias and many errors in the NS Aquaculture Review Board (ARB) decision granting Town Point Consulting Inc.’s (TPCI)’s lease applications
A detailed review of the ARB decision can be found by clicking here. FOAH’s initial comments on this decision can be found in the Update of January 8, 2024
Urge the NS Government to
Cease all public funding via grants, subsidies or other assistance to TPCI
Refuse to sell the historically significant crown land constituting the “Old Town Point Rd” to TPCI’s owners, remove this valuable property from the province’s “Sale and Disposal” category, survey and mark this road to enable unhindered public access
Application Status:
ARB and hearings took place on June 7-10 and September 26-28, 2023. The ARB approved TPCI’s three lease applications on January 5, 2024 in a written decision which can be found at https://arb.novascotia.ca/decisions
